What is the Gwanghwamun Market about?
Gwanghwamun Market is a Christmas-themed winter market held annually at Gwanghwamun Square, the heart of Seoul. Running from December 13, 2024, to January 5, 2025, the market transforms the iconic square into a festive village brimming with lights, stalls, and seasonal cheer.
The market is part of Seoul’s efforts to promote winter tourism and support local businesses. It is also often held alongside the Seoul Lantern Festival, which illuminates the city with stunning lantern displays.
What to Expect
A Magical Christmas Village
The market’s centerpiece is a giant Christmas tree surrounded by vibrant booths and festive décor. Perfect for families, the market includes a Santa Village where kids (and adults!) can enjoy festive activities and take photos in a village that looks like it just came out of a holiday storybook!
2. Local Artisans & Unique Finds
Explore handmade crafts, winter-themed souvenirs, and artisanal gifts. You’ll find everything from Christmas candles and ornaments to local artworks such as jewelry and scarves. It’s an excellent spot for picking up one-of-a-kind gifts to bring back home.
3. Delicious Winter Treats
No festival is complete without food! Indulge in seasonal snacks like hotteok (sweet Korean pancakes), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), roasted chestnuts, and warm drinks to keep the cold at bay.
4. Fun Activities and Events
Make your visit extra special by participating in exciting events happening throughout the market:
– Survey Event: Look for banners around the market and scan the QR code to participate in a quick survey. As a reward, you’ll receive a charming Christmas notebook.

2. Bring Cash: While many stalls accept cards, smaller verndors may prefer cash.
3. Combine Your Visit: Gwanghwamun Market is held right at the center of Gwanghwamun Square, which is close to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, or the trendy shopping area of Insadong.
